Military medals are among the most meaningful custom metal products we manufacture. They represent courage, dedication, and a lifetime of service. For military units, veterans' organizations, and government agencies, commissioning custom military medals requires a manufacturer who understands both the significance of the award and the technical demands of production.

Choosing the right manufacturer is critical—military medals must meet strict standards for design accuracy, material quality, and durability. We take this responsibility seriously—every medal we produce is crafted with precision and care, ensuring it honors the service it represents.

From the key types of military medals and their design elements to manufacturing options and customization—here is what you need to know when ordering custom military awards.

What Types of Military Medals Are There?

Valor Medals

Valor medals are awarded for acts of gallantry and bravery in the face of danger. These are the highest honors a service member can receive, featuring distinct designs that reflect courage under fire. Examples include the Medal of Honor (the highest U.S. military decoration), the Silver Star Medal (awarded for gallantry in action), and the Bronze Star Medal with "V" device (denoting valor). These medals typically feature bold, commanding designs with stars, eagles, and patriotic symbols that convey heroism and sacrifice.

Meritorious Service Medals

Meritorious service medals recognize distinguished service over a sustained period. These medals honor excellence that exceeds standard expectations. Examples include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Joint Service Commendation Medal. These awards are often more refined in design, focusing on clean lines, elegant ribbon combinations, and symbols of service such as the eagle, shield, or military branch emblems. They are typically presented at formal ceremonies and are worn on dress uniforms.

Achievement Medals

Achievement medals are awarded for meritorious achievement or service of a superlative nature, typically for junior officers and enlisted personnel. Examples include the Army Achievement Medal and the Navy Achievement Medal. These awards recognize professional and leadership achievements that are clearly of a superlative nature. Their designs are often more modern and streamlined, with bold text, clean borders, and recognizable military symbols, making them distinctive and easily identifiable.

What Design Elements Define a Military Medal?

Military medals feature specific design elements that convey meaning and tradition. Understanding these elements helps you create authentic, respectful awards.

1. The Star

The five-pointed star is the most recognized symbol on U.S. military medals. It represents honor, excellence, and achievement. The star can be rendered in flat or 3D sculpted relief, depending on the design depth you require. The Medal of Honor, for example, features a distinctive five-pointed star with trefoil-tipped points, representing the highest ideals of military service. Each point of the star holds symbolic meaning, and the overall design is instantly recognizable across all branches of the military.

2. The Eagle

The eagle is a prominent design element representing the United States. It often appears with outstretched wings, clutching olive branches and arrows—symbols of peace and martial readiness. On the Medal of Honor, an eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows surmounts the bar inscribed "VALOR." The eagle's presence on a medal immediately signals its American military origin and adds a sense of authority and tradition. For custom military medals, incorporating an eagle can instantly elevate the design's authenticity and emotional resonance.

3. Ribbon Colors

Ribbon colors are carefully chosen to convey meaning. The colors on a military medal's ribbon are not decorative—they carry specific significance. Standard colors include:

Ribbon Color

Meaning

Red

Courage and sacrifice

Blue

Loyalty and justice

White

Purity of purpose

Gold

Excellence and achievement

The specific combination and arrangement of colors follow established military traditions. For example, the Medal of Honor's light blue ribbon with 13 white stars honors the original thirteen colonies and the highest ideals of the nation. Understanding these traditions is essential when designing custom military medals that honor service with authenticity and respect.

4. Engraving

Recipient names, dates, and unit information can be engraved on the edge or back of the medal. This personalizes each award and adds lasting value. Engraving is typically done in a clean, legible serif or sans-serif font, matching the formality of the award. For custom military medals, engraving can include names, dates, unit insignia, or even short inscriptions such as "For Service" or "In Recognition Of." Proper engraving ensures that each medal becomes a unique, meaningful keepsake that can be passed down through generations.

What Can You Customize on a Military Medal?

Beyond materials and manufacturing, military medals offer a wide range of customization possibilities. Here is a detailed breakdown of what you can tailor to your specific needs.

1. Size

Military medals come in standard sizes ranging from 1.0 inch to 2.0 inches (25mm to 50mm). The right size depends on how the medal will be used:

  • 1.25 inches (32mm) – The standard size for dress uniforms and daily wear. Clean, understated, and professional.

  • 1.5 inches (38mm) – The most popular size for most military medals. Substantial enough to feel significant, yet practical for uniform wear.

  • 2.0 inches (50mm) – Recommended for commemorative medals, presentation pieces, and special ceremonies. The larger size allows for more design detail and makes a stronger visual impact.

We also offer custom sizes outside this range upon request.

2. Shape

The shape of your medal sets the tone for the entire design. We offer:

  • Round: The classic, timeless shape that works for virtually any award. Versatile and traditional.

  • Shield: Conveys strength, protection, and military heritage. Ideal for unit insignia and crest designs.

  • Star: Bold and prestigious. Perfect for valor medals and recognition of excellence.

  • Custom Shapes: Virtually any shape is possible—from unit mascots to branch-specific symbols. Custom shapes require a one-time mold fee, which can be reused for future orders.

3. Thickness

Medal thickness typically ranges from 2mm to 5mm, depending on the design and material:

  • 2mm – 3mm: Standard thickness for most medals. Lightweight, comfortable for uniform wear, and cost-effective.

  • 4mm – 5mm: Premium thickness for commemorative or presentation pieces. Feels more substantial and prestigious in the hand.

4. Ribbon Bars

Custom ribbon bars are available in multiple styles and widths. We offer:

  • Standard Military Colors: Red, blue, white, gold, and combinations thereof—following established military color traditions.

  • Custom Color Matching: We can match your unit colors or specific Pantone color codes.

  • Width Options: Ribbon bars come in various widths to complement your medal size.

  • Ribbon Patterns: Stripes, chevrons, and other patterns are available to match specific award traditions.

5. Packaging

How your medals are presented matters. We offer seven packaging options, plus custom solutions:

  • Velvet Box: Premium, hinged boxes with a velvet insert. Perfect for formal ceremonies and high-value awards.

  • Velvet Bag: Soft and elegant drawstring pouches. Ideal for individual gifting and souvenir distribution.

  • OPP Bag: Cost-effective and transparent. Ideal for bulk orders or medals that will be distributed individually. Lightweight and protective.

  • Presentation Wood Box: A premium wooden box with a foam insert for secure display. Designed for prestigious awards and special presentations.

  • Plastic Box: A durable plastic box with a black base and a transparent lid, offering clear visibility while keeping the medal protected and elegantly displayed.

  • Paper Box: A lightweight and eco-friendly display option. Designed to showcase a single medal or a full collection. Can include custom printing, nameplates, and event-specific details.

Branding Note: With the exception of OPP bags, all packaging options can be customized with your logo—including printing, embossing, or foil stamping—to reinforce your brand identity and create a premium unboxing experience.

6. Pin Backings & Attachments

Military medals require secure attachment options for proper wearing on uniforms. We offer a range of standard mounting options:

  • Ribbon + Pin: The classic and most common mounting option for single medals. The ribbon passes through the ring at the top of the medal, and a pin bar on the back of the ribbon secures it to the uniform. Available with standard pin or safety pin backing.

  • Ribbon + Butterfly Clutch: The same ribbon and medal setup, but secured with a butterfly clutch on the back of the ribbon bar. Provides a more secure hold than a standard pin.

  • Slide Holder (Medal Mounting Bar): For wearing multiple medals together. Each medal is attached to a slide holder, and the entire row is worn as a single unit. This is the standard for formal military dress uniforms.

  • Ribbon Bar Clips: For securing individual ribbon bars (ribbon-only representations of medals) to the uniform. The clip attaches to the ribbon bar and fastens with a butterfly clutch.

  • Neck Ribbon: Used for high-level medals such as the Medal of Honor. The medal hangs from a ribbon worn around the neck, rather than being pinned to the uniform. Also used for commemorative medals and presentation pieces.

  • Magnetic Backing: Ideal for lightweight medals or temporary display. No holes in fabric. Gentle on delicate uniform fabrics.

7. Production Timeline

  • 2/3D Design Proof: 1-2 days after artwork approval

  • Physical Sample: 3-10 days (depending on design complexity and relief depth)

  • Full Production: 15 days

  • Shipping: 3-7 days (depending on destination and shipping method)

We recommend placing your order at least 4-6 weeks before your event or presentation date. This allows time for design revisions, sample approval, and production without rushing any step.
